Marvel's Cinematic Universe: It's a wonderful concept created way back in 2008 when Iron Man became the hope for Marvel fans to one day witness the thought impossible The Avengers. Since then, we have seen numerous characters come to life, villains and heroes alike. Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and even some great supporting characters like War Machine, Bucky, The Warriors Three, Nick Fury, and General Ross. We saw Iron Man take down Iron Monger, Captain America defeat the Red Skull, the Hulk smash the Abomination, and Thor crush Loki and the Frost Giants. Not to mention all the Avengers as a team beating the living hell out of a bunch of alien warriors.
So, it's 2013 and movies like Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant Man, and Dr. Strange, are in the works. What other characters ought to be explored that haven't been already? Well, here are some do-gooders and baddies I would like to one day see come out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whether they get their own film or just play a pivotal role in someone else's, I think these are the most realistically possible characters to appear one day in film.
When thinking of big villains to throw into the MCU, I stopped to ponder about the movie Dr. Stephen Strange is rumored to be getting. Well, if there is one villain I would like to see him battle, it's Dormammu. The immortal demon has been often seen doing battle against Dr. Strange, bending his mind and tricking him into doing things he would normally not dare. He's teamed up with Loki, he's fought the Avengers on occasion, and he's brutally powerful. Watching Strange battle this epic foe on screen would be incredible, and while perhaps too big a villain for Dr. Strange's first movie, a sequel could one day bring this supernatural subjugator into theaters. This is of course only possible if Marvel decides to go beyond their three Phase plan at the moment.
With Guardians of the Galaxy coming out, there is one character that I cannot help but think of. If the MCU is going cosmic, then we absolutely need Nova to join the fray. The sole member of the destroyed Nova Corps, Richard Rider fights for justice with the power and guidance of the Worldmind computer. Nova is just simply a cool character, and one who could easily get involved in the MCU. I mean, if we can try and sell Rocket Raccoon and Groot, then we can definitely work Nova on screen. Plus, Nova means we can move a step closer to getting an “Annihilation” movie. If you don't know what that is, it's an awesome comic crossover event, and you should read it. That'll get your Nova cravings going.
Thor: The Dark World is premiering in November, and I am really excited to see Malekith and Kurse do battle with the Odinson. Of course, there are other Thor villains I would have rather seen, and I think the Enchantress is one of them. Now, I am not saying that Amora can support her own villain role in a Thor film, but rather she would be a supporting villain instead. All I want is at some point to see her and her trusty Executioner, Skurge, appear in the films and play a role in undoing the mighty thunder god. There are so many characters up there in Asgard and beyond, I would hate to limit it to what we have seen so far. I want to see the Enchantress toy and play with Thor's heart, and Mjolnir to clash with the immense axe of the Executioner. Make it happen.
This one is a bit of a long shot, and I'm not really sure how it would all go down, but I would love to see a Heroes for Hire film, or, just the appearance of the dynamic duo Luke Cage and Iron Fist. These guys are some of Marvel's best, and would be a heck of a lot of fun in a sort of, seudo-buddy cop film about them trying to be as good as the Avengers in the aftermath of the New York incident. The thing is, I'm not sure how strong they would fare on their own; I mean if Marvel didn't think a Hawkeye or Black Widow film was necessary/would work then I don't have hope for these two. But, that being said I still think it would be great to get these guys involved and watch them kick ass. With unbreakable skin and powerful ancient martial arts respectively, Luke Cage and Iron Fist are the BFF's that the MCU needs.
Ant Man is coming to theaters in 2015, and had this list been made a few months ago, Ant Man himself would have been on this list. So since we already know Ant Man is on his way, there is another character I would want to see debut in the MCU instead: Yellowjacket. The sort of, alter ego of Hank Pym, Yellowjacket was born out of a change in costume, but became so much more when Hank suffered a complete breakdown and depression after striking the Wasp and being booted from the Avengers. He essentially falls off the superhero-wagon, and becomes a dark two-sided character. Yellowjacket would eventually be redeemed and Pym himself of course, but it would be an interesting turn of events in the films to watch the degradation of Hank's character, and see him become Yellowjacket in times of bad and good.
We all know at some point whether due to the story itself or actors just getting fatigued, at some point we will lose a current Avenger or two. The team in the comics is changing all the time, so who says it's so wrong to have a different team at some point down the line. It's bound to happen if Marvel goes beyond Phase three. So, if we made room for some new Avengers (because at this point there is likely to be a possibility of having over a dozen involved by the time Avengers 3 comes out), who would join up? Well one of my top contenders would be Black Panther.
T'Challa of the country Wakanda needs to be in this Marvel Universe. With his expert ninja like skills and vibranium claws, the Black Panther is one of the coolest Avengers out there and one of my personal favorites. He's also one of the wisest and smartest members of the team. And besides, let's be real here, the current Avengers line up is a little pale if you know what I mean. Sure we've got African American heroes like War Machine and the upcoming Falcon, but those guys are basically side-kicks. We need a full fledged African American Avenger, and I think Black Panther is a perfect fit.
When Captain America: The First Avenger came out, I was pumped for Red Skull. But since then all I can think about is when I am going to see Baron Zemo. Zemo is right up there with Skull for Cap's greatest foes, and while I'm really happy to be getting Bucky as the Winter Soldier, I must admit I am kind of disappointed with Crossbones as the villain for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Zemo is much more well known and I personally enjoy Zemo more than Crossbones. Doing a story where Cap fought the original Heinrich Zemo during the events of Captain America: The First Avenger and then having him fight his son or grandson, Helmut Zemo in the present day, could be a way to bring the villain to the present MCU.
Heroines are in short supply in the MCU, with Black Widow being the only true female Avenger. There are plenty of great women in Marvel, and my number one pick would be none other than Ms. Marvel. Imbued with the power of the Kree race, Carol Danvers became the energy absorbing Ms. Marvel, and a prominent member of the Avengers. She could be introduced perhaps in a similar way to how the Leader was in The Incredible Hulk, with her being an ally and then gaining her powers near the end for a future appearance. Or she could be laid in like how Hawkeye was in Thor. Just hearing the name Carol Danvers in one of Marvel's future films would give me both chills and great hope to see the high flying hero on screen. It can be done, it'll just take some thought.
This fall, we will receive the pleasure of watching a new television pilot by Joss Whedon. Agents of SHIELD will be given the opportunity to air across the country, bringing the Marvel Universe beyond the theaters and into our homes. It potentially could be one of the best things to come out of the MCU, so even though technically it's not the cinematic universe directly, it is still connected to it. What I would love to see from this show, are loads of cameos. Names being dropped, hints at the potential future of the MCU, stuff like that.
Every episode or few episodes could contain an arc with heroes and villains causing SHIELD to spring into action. We could see room for smaller time heroes like Mockingbird and Cloak and Dagger. We could see villains too small or insignificant for the films play a part in these episodes, and get to dig deeper into how the whole MCU works in conjunction with the non-super hero world. It could be a great opportunity to keep the MCU alive and pumping throughout the year, with cameos constantly expanding the 'verse in ways the films couldn't even handle.
And now, for my number one: Ultron. Yes, it's an Ant Man villain. Well, more than that really, but his origins derive from Pym's work. Ultron is one of the biggest and baddest robotic overlords out there, bent on exterminating all of humanity. He is the worst and most horrific thing Hank Pym ever created, and would give tremendous weight to all of Hank's mistakes he could potentially make throughout the Ant Man films. Watching him become Ant Man, fall as Yellowjacket, and attempt to rise back up only to be stopped by his ultimate mistake, Ultron, would push the Ant Man character to his limits.
We could see the Avengers desperately try to take down the near impenetrable robot, with intellect so great even the smartest Avengers would be at a loss. Plus, it could give way to the creation of The Vision, a fellow Avenger created by Ultron. I just think seeing this monstrosity on screen would be absolutely epic, and the teasing of his construction in the post credit scene of the Ant Man film would be awesome. Yes, Ultron is definitely the character I would love to most see come out of the MCU.
Well, Marvel has their hands full and it's going to take much work and thought to make any of this come true. But, if there is anyone that can do it's them. I am overly ecstatic to see what Marvel truly does have in store for us, and if even just one of the things on this list comes true, that's good enough for me.
